MR Narayan Swamy, a journalist since 1978, has spent most of his career working for Indian and international news agencies. He has followed the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict from when it erupted into insurgency in 1983. He covered the horrific bloodletting till the time the Sri Lankan military crushed the LTTE and killed its leaders, including Velupillai Prabhakaran.
Narayan Swamy has visited Sri Lanka innumerable times, and interacted with most all the actors on the Tamil side. His first book, Tigers of Lanka, was published in 1994. It was a pathbreaking study of the origin and growth of Tamil militancy in Sri Lanka. His next book, Inside an Elusive Mind, was the first and unauthorized biography of Prabhakaran. It came out in 2003 to widespread acclaim, like the first work. Narayan Swamy's third book, The Tiger Vanquished (2010), was a collection of news stories covering the period the separatist war raged. His latest book, published in October this year, is The Rout of Prabhakaran. It challenges conventional wisdom and, on the strength of intense research and interviews, concludes that the LTTE is mainly to blame for its own annihilation. Narayan Swamy was born and educated in Delhi and has spent his entire career in the city. He is widely travelled and lives in New Delhi.
